Hulme Life – Oasis drummer tells all

"Former Oasis Drummer Tony McCarroll has just released a book about his time in the band, which is simply called Oasis: The Truth."
"The reason I wrote the book in the first place was because of 'Noel Gallagher-isms,'" he told 6 Music. "You know, his one-liners.

"I felt it was about time that I stuck up for myself. There was a bit of bad press out there and I thought, 'right, I'm going to put my side of the story across.'"

The memoirs aren't likely to build any bridges between McCarroll and the Gallaghers - but he says he never expected that.

"I'd be absolutely shocked if there was any kind of reconciliation," he said. "It's the way Noel is. Once you've crossed him, it's hard to go back."

Hulme Life – How To Improve Memory

Forgetting is easy, remembering is hard. Why is this? Well, there are obviously a number of different aspects one needs to consider to be able to answer that question properly. However, there are simple tips & tricks that you can learn to improve your memory right here and now.

This article covers some basic techniques to improve your memory. If you wish to learn more advanced techniques on how to improve memory. Please take a look at the Study Guide PRO by clicking here.

You are not a circus elephant

Don’t believe the myth. Believing that you have a bad memory is the first mistake. Don’t convince yourself that you’ve got a bad memory by default, no matter what people say. All you need to do is harness the memory capabilities that are already present. You see, people don’t develop a bad memory all of sudden, it usually takes time and effort to convince oneself of this. Take the circus elephant for instance.

If you’ve ever been to a circus, you’ll know that the elephants are usually tied up in chains starting from a young age. It lies in the elephants nature to want to escape and it most certainly tries in the beginning. But after a while, when it’s been chained up for a couple of years (it’s pretty horrible when you think of it), it simple gives up. If you were to remove it’s chains it would in most cases NOT try to escape. Now why is this?

Well, you see the elephant has now already convinced itself that fighting back is fruitless and thus it still believes that the chains are there. There’s a lesson to be learned here. You need to remove these invincible chains that are blocking you from remembering things before you can proceed to improve your memory.

2. Throw away the lifelines

Lifelines are the things you hold on to just in case you were to forget. For instance, if you go shopping and keep a grocery list that’s you lifeline or if someone gives you their number and you write it down that’s also a lifeline. By relying on these notes and applications you make less use of your memorization capabilities. Obviously there are times when something must be written down due to it’s importance but in most cases you can go without doing this. So the next time you’re out shopping or a friend gives you a number, don’t write it down and instead try to remember it. The more you do this, the more your brain will start to putting things into memory again.

3. Repeat it, repeat it

It’s extremely difficult to remember something when you’ve only heard it once. Why do you remember your own phone number? Is it because it’s “easier” or because you’ve said it out loud so many times it has stuck in your memory. This is exactly what we want to achieve. If you have something important to remember, always repeat it to yourself as often as possible and if you could, try to talk about it often as well. When you discuss an idea, it’s easier for your brain to remember what was being discussed than simply what you had in your head.

4. Eat well, drink well yada yada

We all know this but how easy it is to forget! Don’ eat to much nor to little or you won’t be able to remember this riddle. Moderation is the key. If you eat too much you’ll feel tired and drowsy and if you eat to little, you’ll feel hungry and fatigued. Both these things are great obstacles standing in your way towards a better memory.

5. Organize your life

Keep things organized. It doesn’t have to be ordered in the way that other people view as organized as long as it fulfills the purpose. The more organized you become, the keener you become to remembering things. That’s why I recommend you to make mental lists in your head. By organizing information you make it easier to recall in the future. Always try to keep it simple and straightforward.

6. Practice

There’s really no super simple technique to drastically improve your memory. In order to improve it you need both patience and a lot of practice. The more you practice, the better. I hope you enjoyed these tips of mine, if you want to learn some advanced memorization techniques I would deeply recommend you to take a look at the Study Guide PRO. It contains a whole section on advanced techniques on how to improve ones memory.

Hulme Life – Cheap & easy vegetable broth

Love to eat pasta and rice, but hate the fat and calories? Here's a quick, cheap, easy and green way to make pasta, rice, soups, stews, etc. more healthy. Here's how: After thoroughly washing your vegetables, save all the skins, parings, peels, scrapings (in other words, garbage), such as:

  • Broccoli and cauliflower stems
  • Carrot and parsnip tops and peels
  • Potato skins (both white and sweet)
  • Onion tops and skins
  • Garlic skins
  • Pepper cores
  • Tomato ends
  • Cabbage and lettuce leaves
  • Celery stems
  • Squash or pumpkin peelings (no seeds, though)
  • Cucumber and zucchini peels

This cheap and easy broth is an quick way to get more vegetables each day, plus a great way to go green!

You get the idea. Again, be sure to wash the vegetables thoroughly before peeling as you don't want dirt added to your broth. Collect all these odds and ends in a large plastic freezer bag and keep them in the sealed bag in the refrigerator. When the bag is full, or the contents are in danger of rotting, dump them all into a large soup pot. Add enough water to cover, and add a few whole peppercorns for flavor. You may also want to add a dash or two of tumeric, which is full of health benefits (check it out at http://www.healthdiaries.com/eatthis/20-health-benefits-of-turmeric.html). Put a lid on the pot, and let the mixture boil for about 10 minutes, then let it simmer on low for anywhere from 30 mintues to an hour.

Allow it to cool completely, then strain the "used" vegetable renderings out. If you have a compost heap, throw these right into it to help add nutrients to the soil. Read more about compost heaps at http://hubpages.com/hub/Make-Compost-For-Your-Vegetable-Garden.

Pour the vegetable broth (depending on what types of vegetables were added, and whether or not you added tumeric, it should be a nice "tea" color) into clean jars. Put the jar lids on tightly, label them and keep in the refrigerator. Since there are no preservatives in it, use within 1-3 weeks. Another great benefit to making your own broth is that there is no sodium!

Now comes the fun part; using the broth. Instead of boiling your pasta or rice in plain water, use the vegetable broth instead of water. Although wholegrain pasta and brown rice are a healthier choice, even plain white pasta and rice benefit from all vegetable nutrients in the broth. (By the way, the vegetable flavor is hard to detect; vegetable-haters need not know what's in the water!)

If you are making spaghetti sauce, stew, soup, stir-fry, etc., and need liquid, simply add the "used" broth from the pasta or rice or just add fresh broth. If you need a quick pick-me-up on a cold day, heat up a cup of the vegetable broth and enjoy with crackers.

This cheap and easy broth is an quick way to get more vegetables each day, plus a great way to go green!

Hulme Life – Chorlton Park to unveil new £100,000 playground after two-year development

"Families across Chorlton will gather to celebrate the opening of a new £100,000 playground this weekend."

Exciting new equipment has been installed in Chorlton Park after a two year project, and children and parents are expected to flock to the opening on Saturday.

In 2008, The Chorlton Park Regeneration Group recognised that the ‘old and tired’ play area needed some investment and was and not attracting youngsters. They applied to Groundwork UK and Big Lottery Fund’s Community Spaces programme and were the only group in the North West region to scoop a large grant of £100,000. Manchester City Council then backed that with an additional £10,000.

New play equipment includes a zip wire, a large tube slide, trampolines and swings. Developers hope that once in the park youths will also use the park’s football pitches, artificial cricket wicket, tennis courts, and skate park. The project has taken over two years to build. In that time the regeneration group has consulted the local community to discover what young people want from a playground.

Cherryl Clements, co-chair of the Chorlton Park Regeneration Group said: "If you have a good idea and are prepared to give your time to a project then this playground proves it can be done.

Hulme Life – Do children learn better with male teachers?

“The study found that male teachers foster self esteem, perceptions of fairness, but that they are no more lenient than female teachers.”

A recent article in The Daily Mail suggested pupils make more effort with male teachers as they are seen as more fair. The article was based on information from a study by researchers from Westminster University, the London School of Economics and the graduate business school INSEAD who carried out an experiment involving 1,200 pupils aged 12-13 in 29 schools. They wanted to explore what shaped children’s effort, motivation and educational achievement.

“Each pupil received £2 and was asked to buy up to ten questions, priced 20p each. The questions involved having to define the meaning of words. A correct answer doubled their money each time while an incorrect one forfeited 20p. Therefore, pupils who tried ten questions and got them all correct could earn £4. In one group, marking was done anonymously by an external examiner. In the other, marking was done by the teacher in the classroom.” (www.dailymail.co.uk, 30th Oct 2010)

In the study there were 9 male and 18 female teachers and it explored the number of questions the pupils bought in each group, their perceptions of grading and willingness to make effort. There wasn’t much difference in the number of questions purchased between the groups but when the marking was done by the teacher, pupils bought significantly more questions when they were assessed by men.

“The study found that male teachers foster self esteem, perceptions of fairness, but that they are no more lenient than female teachers.” (www.dailymail.co.uk, 30th Oct 2010)

This is particularly interesting at a time when male secondary school teacher numbers are dropping and many primary schools have no male teachers. Also, at 121 Home Tutors we frequently find parents request female tutors, maybe because they feel more comfortable with a woman teaching their child? But, could this mean they are doing their child an academic disservice?

Hulme Life – Manchester City

Manchester City seem to be the new up and coming footy team since they have had a big cash boost, they have gone from strength to strength. There new City of Manchester stadium is stunning apart from the spikey art decor which is not to my liking ( hey everybody has there own view).   One of the great points i wanted to stress was the fact that, this whole new resurgance of Manchester City has created jobs and futures for people of manchester.

Manchester City has a large fanbase in relation to its comparative lack of success on the pitch. Since moving to the City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester City's average attendances have been in the top six in England, usually in excess of 40,000. Even in the late 1990s, when the club were relegated twice in three seasons and playing in the third tier of English football (then Division Two, now Football League One), home attendances were in the region of 30,000, compared to an average for the division of fewer than 8,000. Research carried out by Manchester City in 2005 estimates a fanbase of 886,000 in the United Kingdom and a total in excess of 2 million worldwide.

Hulme Life – Manchester United

Manchester United for me are one of the best teams in the world, reason being they are play more of a team game, with good players, not super stars (well maybe the chap who went to spain, as you know this was good business. Like Manchester City they employ local people and are respected highly around the world, i think this is a great achievement from a team that started in Newton Heath.

Having won 18 league titles, four League Cups and a record 11 FA Cups,[4] Manchester United is one of the most successful clubs in the history of English football. The club has also won three European Cups and is unique in having won a Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League Treble, in the 1998–99 season.

Manchester United is one of the wealthiest and most widely supported football teams in the world. The club is said to be worth £1.19 billion, making it the most valuable football club in the world. After being floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1991, the club was purchased by Malcolm Glazer in May 2005 in a deal valuing the club at almost £800 million.

Manchester United is reputed to be the most popular football club in the world, with the highest average home attendance in Europe. The club's worldwide fan base includes more than 200 officially recognised branches of the Manchester United Supporters Club (MUSC), in at least 24 countries. The club takes advantage of this support through its worldwide summer tours. Accountancy firm and sports industry consultants Deloitte estimate that Manchester United has 75 million fans worldwide, while other estimates put this figure closer to 333 million.

Hulme Life – Hulme Bridge (new times)

Stretford Road was divided into two halves in 1969 by the construction of Princess Road. A footbridge was subsequently constructed, crossing Princess Road at the same place as the road previously ran. As part of the regeneration of the Hulme district, it was decided to construct a new bridge to rejoin the two sections of the road, and also to provide a local landmark.

The design of the bridge was selected via a two-staged, closed design competition, commissioned by Hulme Regeneration Ltd and Manchester City Council. The first stage of the competition was held in March 1995, and had six entries. The winning design was selected in June 1995, and was from architects Chris Wilkinson Architects, with the structural engineer being Ove Arup & Partners. The reference for the design of the bridge was Eero Saarinen's Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

The three sections of decking were assembled on the broad central reservation of Princess Road, and were craned into position over a weekend when Princess Road was closed. The decking was temporarily supported by trestles until the arch was ready. The six sections of the arch were welded together on site into two halves before being lifted into position during a second weekend. The cables were connected on third weekend. The bridge was formally opened on 10 May 1997 by Alex Ferguson in a ceremony including the Lord Mayor of Manchester and Tony Wilson. The ceremony was concluded by them being driven over the bridge in a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, and was followed by a street festival.

The bridge has been described by the structural engineers as "a perfect example of how imaginative design combined with leading-edge engineering technology can be used to create a landmark structure which captures the public's imagination."

Hulme Life – The Bull Ring Hulme (old times)

In Hulme, a new and (at the time) innovative design for deck access and tower living was attempted. This consisted of curved rows of low-rise flats with deck access far above the streets was created, known as the "Crescents" (which were, with unintentional irony, architecturally based on terraced housing in Bath). In this arrangement, motor vehicles remained on ground level with pedestrians on concrete walkways overhead, above the smoke and fumes of the street. People living in these new flats were rehoused from decaying Victorian slums which lacked electricity, running water, bathrooms or indoor toilets, and were mostly overcrowded.

High-density housing was balanced with large green spaces and trees below, and the pedestrian had priority on the ground over cars. The 1960s redevelopment of Hulme split the area's new council housing into a number of sections. Hulme 2 was the area between Jackson Crescent and Royce Road. Hulme 3 was between Princess Road and Boundary Road based along the pedestrianised Epping Walk, Hulme 4 was between Princess Road and Royce Road and Hulme 5 - the "Crescents" themselves were between Royce Road and Rolls Crescent.

The crescents became troublesome very shortly after their construction—within a decade, they were declared 'unfit for purpose', and several plans were drawn up that suggested various differing types of renovation and renewal for the blocks, including splitting the buildings into smaller, more manageable structures by removing sections. In the 1980s and 1990s many of these vacant deck-access flats were squatted and the area acquired a 'Bohemian' reputation for its many punks, artists and musicians.

Hulme Life – New Look Hulme

The decision was made in the early 1990s to demolish Hulme's crescent blocks and replace them with low-rise flats and houses. The total amount of public and private money spent on improving Hulme and neighbouring Moss Side between 1990 and 2002 had exceeded £400 million. The area by then had become popular and desirable, containing a mix of council and privately-owned housing.

One part of Hulme, the Birley Fields, has been partly developed for a series of office blocks and partly retained as urban parkland. The blocks house companies such as Michelin and Laing O'Rourke as well as the University of Manchester/IFL/Server Hotel data centre. In 2009, Manchester Metropolitan University announced plans for the redevelopment of Birley Fields as the site of a new £120 Million campus. The proposed scheme, which will utilise cutting edge environmental technologies, includes new academic buildings, student accommodation and the landscaping of the area will include a new community square. As of December 2010 the project is seeking final planning permission and works are due to start in 2011.

Hulme's proximity to the city centre has meant that it has become a popular place to live for a new generation of city dwellers. The area is popular with young professionals who are attracted by apartment prices that are cheaper than the city centre and yet within a 15 minute walk to the centre of town and the main university campus. Students of the University of Manchester are also choosing to live in many of the student-focused residential developments in the area

It's proximity to the city centre gives easy access to the many bars, restaurants and cultural attractions of Manchester. But local amenities including the Zion Arts Centre, Hulme Community Garden Centre, Hulme Park and the excellant Kim by the Sea give the area a nice bohemian feel at times. And for everyday shopping there is the Hulme Shopping Centre which includes an ASDA supermarket and a little indoor market that is worth a look.

Hulme Life – Early days Break dancing (It’s not new!)

Back in 1984 Manchester’s Broken Glass were the best-known breakdance crew in the UK, appearing on a whole host of national TV programmes ranging from the cutting-edge music show, The Tube, to children’s favourite “CBTV”, and even popping up at peak-time on a Saturday night (ITV’s “Some You Win”).

The Broken Glass Street Crew originally came together in the summer of 1983, busking in Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester city centre. They were true pioneers of British breaking (Kermit, a founding member, would be the first UK breakdancer photographed for a national publication). At this point in time, Manchester was at the heart of the underground Electro-Funk scene, from which the early British b-boys (and fly girls) emerged, and I was the DJ at the North’s leading specialist black music nights of the era, Wednesday at Legend and Tuesday at The Pier, in nearby Wigan.

I’d also taken over the Friday night at The Haçienda, then very much an alternative venue, and, in addition to this, would appear at the clubs Saturday night sessions, playing for an hour each week, and introducing their regular crowd to the New York Electro that held sway on the black scene.

The original break era was a life-changing period for so many people, who as a result would become DJs, dancers, rappers and musicians. For young blacks in particular, this was a truly inspirational time, and Broken Glass perfectly reflected this spirit of creativity.

Kermit eventually became one of the UK’s best-known rappers following his debut on “Style Of The Street”, firstly as part of the Manchester trio, the Ruthless Rap Assassins, whose “Killer Album” in 1990 was critically acclaimed as a major landmark for British rap. Kermit would go on to hook up with Shaun Ryder of The Happy Mondays to form Black Grape, scoring a Number 1 album and a string of hit singles, whilst a second ex-Broken Glass member, Dave ‘The Wave’ (now known as Davy T) has also sold over a million records worldwide, this time with various dance projects, including The Porn Kings and 2 Funky 2.

Hearing the news of Swanny’s passing on February 20th 2006 was obviously a huge shock for all of the Broken Glass crew. The following Friday night, Benji Reid dedicated the opening night of his new production, “Life of a B-Boy”, to Swanny. The performance at the Zion Arts Centre in Hulme. Manchester, was attended by members of Broken Glass. A particularly poignant moment was when, after paying tribute to Swanny, Benji mentioned that his newly born daughter, who was just a week old, was in the audience - a reminder that birth and death are intertwined, with all of us subject to life’s cycle.

You can't go wrong with a quick, healthy lunch for £2. For that you get a piping hot bowl of soup and a roll of your choice (from a selection of around four or five), and if you're feeling slightly more peckish you can upgrade to a larger bowl for a mere 50p. Ah, how I love the Arndale Food Market.
